Everyday Consumer Products and Places: Making Safer Choices with Proposition 65

This page offers tips to help you reduce your exposure to Proposition 65-listed chemicals in certain types of everyday consumer products and places of business.

Proposition 65 is a right-to-know law that helps consumers make informed decisions regarding their exposure to toxic chemicals. The law does this by requiring businesses to provide warnings when their products or places of business can expose consumers to chemicals on the Proposition 65 list.

Proposition 65 is one of several laws and programs implemented by the State of California to protect residents from harmful chemicals in consumer products and encourage businesses to use safer alternatives, whenever feasible.

If you see a Proposition 65 warning on a consumer product or place of business, this means that using the product or visiting the site can expose you to one or more chemicals on the Proposition 65 list for cancer or reproductive harm (i.e., potential harm to a developing embryo or fetus, or to a person’s ability to have a healthy baby). You may wish to contact the manufacturer to ask about the chemical exposure that prompted the warning.
